What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a substance extracted from the cannabis sativa plant. CBD is mostly known for being one of two main compounds in the plant alongside THC, and both CBD and THC have different effects on the human body. THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive component, while CBD is the non-psychoactive component that is commonly used in products to create a calming or relaxing sensation. Cannabis contains over 120 different compounds, but CBD and THC are the most notable in the plant.
The naturally occurring substance CBD is not psychoactive and will not get one high, and one generally will not feel sedated when using CBD products. As previously stated, CBD products are commonly used for relaxation but also for pain relief and management. Many have reported feeling more relaxed when using CBD products, and also having some form of pain release from various areas of the body. Additionally, CBD has been used to help with mental anxiety and stress, but has not been researched enough to tell for certain its overarching effects on individuals.
Previously, hemp products were not allowed to be taken in any way, and the sale of hemp products was illegal alongside any cannabis products. The 2018 Farm Bill has allowed less restrictions on the cultivation and sale of hemp products specifically. Since CBD is mostly found in hemp, the beneficial effects of CBD can now be explored in more detail. Additionally, hemp has a variety of other uses including being an important part of clothing, textiles, paper, and even construction materials.
CBD can be taken in many different forms. While some may prefer a topical cream or balm, others have been able to ingest through smoking or vaping. Many people prefer CBD edibles because there is no smoke to inhale. One unique way CBD can be taken is through CBD tinctures, which is a hemp extraction combined within a distilled alcohol arrangement that you take by placing a few drops under your tongue - known as sublingual.
Ingesting CBD in any amount will certainly activate one critical aspect of the human body, the endocannabinoid system. CBD functions as an antioxidant through the endocannabinoid system, aiming to improve mental and physical health. The endocannabinoid system activates through a system of receptors in one's body, and helps maintain healthy balance of the various organs in one's body.
Overall, CBD is a very important substance localized in the cannabis plant. While not psychoactive in any way, the CBD compound is able to help and support the body in many ways.
